DCM

When talking about vegan dog food, many will caution you of DCM (dilated cardiomyopahty) linked to peas, lentils, legumes, and more, but keep in mind these are found in ALL dog food and not just the vegan dog foods. The FDA has been investigating these reports linked to “grain-free” dog foods and not “vegan” dog foods. In fact, many of the brands linked to DCM aren’t even vegan food dog brands.

DCM (Dilated Cardiomyopathy) is a type of heart disease that affects the heart muscle. In dogs, DCM results in the heart muscle becoming weakened and stretched, leading to a decreased ability to pump blood effectively. This can lead to symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, weakness, and collapse. DCM can be caused by various factors, including genetics, nutritional deficiencies, and certain medications. It is more commonly seen in certain breeds, such as Doberman Pinschers, Boxers, and Great Danes. Treatment for DCM often includes medications to support heart function and manage symptoms.

The FDA did release a list of dog foods that were most frequently identified in reported cases of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. The FDA's investigation into DCM and its potential link to certain diets is ongoing, but as of the latest available information, some of the dog food brands most frequently associated with DCM cases reported to the FDA include:

1. Acana
2. Zignature
3. Taste of the Wild
4. 4Health
5. Earthborn Holistic
6. Blue Buffalo
7. Nature's Domain
8. Fromm
9. Merrick
10. California Natural
11. Natural Balance
12. Orijen
13. Nature's Variety
14. NutriSource
15. Nutro

It's important to note that the presence of a brand on this list does not mean that the brand is definitively linked to DCM. The FDA continues to investigate the potential relationship between diet and DCM in dogs. If you have concerns about your dog's diet, it's a good idea to consult with your veterinarian.
